Shadow is a purebred Shih-Tzu who joined the zoo on December 9, 2000. Shadow is blind as the result of an accident when only a few weeks old (someone sat on him).

Blind dogs tend to run around in circles a lot in order to get their bearings. Shadow always runs in a clockwise direction.
I wonder - if we were to take him to the southern hemisphere,

would he run counter clockwise?

Shadow was originally named Solo by his breeder because he was the last one of a litter to be born, and the last one left. The breeder kept him as he could not be sold, but when no longer able to care for him, Solo came to live with us at the zoo.

Everyone had difficulty remembering Solo's given name and since we often referred to him as someone's shadow anyway, as he followed the sound of their footsteps, we renamed him Shadow.

Shadow is affected little by his blindness. He is active, playful, runs around the family room and quickly learned how to jump up on the couch. He also LOVES to cuddle and give kisses.

Solo HATED getting a much needed bath 2 days after his arrival.

Nice and fluffy and clean
after his bath.

Shadow waits to see us again at
Rainbow Bridge

It is a sad day as we mourn the passing of Shadow who suffered heart failure after being administered an anesthetic. He was unable to be revived and it is believed that he may have had hidden brain problems resulting from his earlier accident. We hope that he enjoyed his short time with us as much as we enjoyed his unusual character and behavior that brought much joy and laughter to the zoo.
